What is the Salsa?

The Salsa is a fun and fast Latin dance, with fancy steps that are often very easy to learn. There are many variations of Salsa from the Cuban to the New York Salsa. Some Salsas are vertical, others horizontal or circular, and many a mixture of the three directions. The Salsa is a fun and free dance, and once mastered, you can impress on any dance floor.

Rhythm: Quick, Quick, Slow  Quick, Quick, Slow (QQS, QQS) or 1,2,3(4), 5,6,7(8).

Salsa dance music

Salsa dance music is very fun and highly instrumental. It traditionally utilizes a 4/4 time signature and a tempo of 29 to 47bpm. The most common clave rhythm in salsa is the so-called son clave, which is eight beats long and can be played either in 2-3 or 3-2 style.

History of the Salsa

Salsa really took shape in New York City in the 1950s with the Peurto Rican and Cuban communities. The name Salsa was widely used to describe all types of Latin dances, which all have a fast, fun tempo, such as Merengue and Cha Cha. But in the 1970s the Salsa defined itself as it popularised and became the Salsa we know today. It evolved with influence from the Afro-Caribbean Rumba and Cuban Son dances. This is the most popular Latin dance around the world, with Salsa clubs in major cities throughout the world.
